Effective August 9, 2026 · Made in Canada, governed by PIPEDA
RoommateSplit is a small, independent app for splitting rent, bills, and chores with roommates. This policy describes exactly what the app collects, where it goes, and how to get rid of it. There are no accounts, no passwords, no ads, no analytics, and no trackers — and we never sell or rent your information to anyone.
Everything in RoommateSplit is information you (or a roommate) type or attach yourselves:
We don't collect location, contacts from your address book, device identifiers, or usage analytics. The app never reads anything you didn't put into it.
On your device first. Your household is stored locally on your phone or computer (in the app's local storage) and the app works fully offline.
On our server only if you share. When you turn on sync or invite a roommate with an invite code, a copy of the household is stored on our backend — a database hosted on Railway — for exactly one purpose: keeping the same household in step across your devices and your roommates' devices. If you never sync or invite anyone through a code, nothing is uploaded.
Snapshot invite links (the long QR-style links) carry a copy of the household inside the link itself — minus receipt photos and minus any sync credentials. They are decoded on the recipient's device and are not uploaded by the invite page. Anyone who has the link can read that snapshot, so share it like you'd share the data itself.
Code invites (short 6-character codes) let anyone who has the code see a limited preview — household name, roommate first names and colors, and item counts — but never expenses, balances, photos, or contact info. Codes expire after 30 days.
Under Canada's PIPEDA, we rely on your consent: you choose what to type into the app, and syncing or inviting is an explicit action you take. You can withdraw consent at any time by turning sync off, leaving the household, or deleting the household (see "Deleting your data").
You can enter other people's names, photos, and contact details (for example a roommate's phone number to send them an invite). Please only add information about people who are okay with it — inside a shared household, every member's device gets a copy. If someone asks you to remove their info, remove it in the app, or email us and we'll help.
The household-name field offers optional address autocomplete. While you type there, the text you've typed is sent to Photon (photon.komoot.io), a free geocoding service operated by komoot in the EU, to fetch suggestions. That text — which may be your address — is the only thing sent, and only from that one field. If you'd rather not use it, just ignore the suggestions or type a nickname instead of an address; nothing else in the app talks to Photon.
That's the whole list. This website loads no third-party scripts, fonts, or trackers, and the app contains no advertising or analytics SDKs.
Synced households stay on the server for as long as the household exists, so roommates can keep syncing. Invite codes expire after 30 days. Device-token records persist until the household is deleted.
Deleting your household in the app removes it from our server, along with its invites and device links. Leaving a household unlinks your device. Local data is deleted when you reset the app or remove it from your device. For anything else — including asking us to delete data someone else entered about you — email support@roommatesplit.app and we'll action it within 30 days.
RoommateSplit is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
You can ask us what we hold about your household, ask for corrections, or ask for deletion. Contact support@roommatesplit.app (based in Canada). If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
If we ever change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the effective date above and note the change here.
